2km from the village of Ano Asites is the ancient cemetery of Rizinia.

The excavations in the region began in 1969 by the Italian Archaeological Faculty and an extensive dead city was brought in light, which was found in continuous use since the end of the Minoan era up to the 6th A.C. century. 680 graves were excavated and the most important discoveries are now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

In the end of the cemetery, next to the street, are situated in a very good condition two vaulted buildings of the Roman era. Tradition claims that these were the graves of kings and that there is another one nearby full of gold that still has not been found …
